EGD Procedure
An EGD, or upper endoscopy, is an exam that allows your doctor to look at your esophagus (swallowing tube), stomach, and duodenum (first portion of the small intestine). Your physician uses a thin, flexible tube to look for any changes or abnormalities.
Your doctor may take tissue samples for biopsies during your EGD procedure or remove abnormal growths known as polyps. You will receive medication through an IV, putting you to sleep to keep you comfortable during your procedure. On average, the EGD exam takes 15 to 20 minutes.

After your EGD is completed, you will be moved to a recovery area until you are ready to go home. You will be offered something to drink.
